Question about "chopping off thoughts" versus "steering back"

I am a beginner at meditation and mindfulness. My prior instructions for meditation have been to steer my focus from thought intrusions back to my breathing, in the moment. Is chopping off thoughts better or is this an alternative to use with more compelling or obsessive and persistent thoughts? I would appreciate any ideas and experiences others may have had.

This is a very helpful instruction on the "how to" of following the breath and developing ardency in training the mind. It is great practical information for someone like me who is beginning. The topic is vital and frankly the instruction is to the point and fairly short. I'd recommend it.
